Evidence-based teaching and intervention

children reading

We provide a wide range of specialist teaching service for students (from 5 years old to adults). Our teachers work with researchers at Bangor University to ensure that students get the best, evidence-based teaching techniques to improve their skills.  Specialist tuition can improve students’ reading, writing, spelling and numeracy. For older students, sessions can target study skills and support the use of technology in learning, planning how best to use time and structuring longer pieces of work.  Self-confidence is a key part of learning, and our tutors work with students to improve their self-belief and attitude to learning.  Our specialist teachers have recognised qualifications to teach children with additional requirements and are experienced in working with students of all ages. Staff at the Centre also give advice and offer consultations to parents, teachers, schools and employers.

We offer the following service at the Centre;

1:1 Specialist teaching service for children

Our specialist teachers have recognised qualifications to teach children with additional requirements, and a wealth of relevant experience. We carry out after school teaching for children between the ages of 6 and 16.

Each child will benefit from a tailored, individualised programme to cater for their needs, and which is suitable for children learning through the medium of English or Welsh (or both). We focus on supporting literacy and numeracy, particularly for children with dyslexia or other specific learning difficulties (SpLDs).

  • Lessons take place weekly, and are available in 30 minute, 45 minute or 1 hour sessions.
  • Sessions must be booked in blocks of half term to ensure progress. Note that students are likely to need more than one block of lessons to improve their skills substantially.
  • For children attending secondary school, we also provide help with study and writing skills, time management and organisation skills and curriculum support available. We also aim to strengthen social skills and overall confidence.

Our specialist teachers hold an AMBDA Assessment Practising Certificate (APC).

LEAPS (Leap into Literacy Saturday Course)

The LEAPS programme is designed for all children aged 6 – 11 years old, who can benefit from a bespoke programme targeting oral and written language skills in small group and individual contexts. They will be taught by specialist teachers and Bangor university graduate and undergraduate students who are trained for the purpose. You can choose for your child to follow the programme in either English or Welsh.

  • Each session will include one hour of oral group work with a specialist teacher and a second hour of one to one literacy work with a trained Bangor undergraduate/graduate.
  • The whole LEAPS course is 12 hours, which includes pre-programme and end-of programme skills assessments. Each child will receive a summary report with recommendations for further activities.
  • LEAPS is designed to enhance reading, writing and spelling skills. Children also engage in oral activities including listening to stories, learning vocabulary and working with words, all of which will support their reading development.
  • LEAPS is also designed to help children learn with their peers in small groups, in pairs and individually.

LEA teaching in schools

The Miles Dyslexia Centre's work covers the very large, predominantly rural area of North West Wales.  Consequently, the Centre’s specialist teachers typically work with pupils in their own schools and offer tuition in English or Welsh according to specific need.  The specialist teachers, who make up the teaching team, work in close co-operation and collaboration with the schools and LEAs involved.  Miles Dyslexia Centre teachers follow the Bangor Dyslexia Teaching System and members of the team are fully involved in the development of teaching materials in both English and Welsh.

Our teaching approach is designed for children in monolingual or bilingual education.

  • Lessons are given in either 30 minute sessions or 1 hour sessions a week.
  • The lessons are phonic based and delivered using multisensory approaches.
